The Causal Inference for Industry Study Week is an intensive problem-solving workshop that brings together PhD students, young researchers and industrial partners. Over the course of a week, small groups of researchers from different backgrounds engage in intensive brainstorming and work together to model and solve real-world challenges provided by industrial partners.

The study week warmly welcomes a wide scientific audience, particularly in the fields of applied mathematics, engineering, statistics and computer science.

Main objectives of the study week

  • Present the potential of causal inference to solve industrial problems;
  • Stimulate sustainable R&D collaborations between academia and industry;
  • Enable academic partnerships between researchers from different backgrounds and areas of expertise;
  • Promote knowledge transfer from university to industry.

Location

The Institut Pascal is located on the Orsay campus of the Université Paris-Saclay, some 25 km southwest of Paris. The campus is accessible from Paris by RER B, and the building can be reached in around 50 minutes from Châtelet-Les Halles station in central Paris.

The address is 530 rue André Rivière, Orsay (GPS coordinates: 48◦42024.200N2◦10038.100E).

Program

On Monday morning, company representatives present their challenges, after which participants can ask questions in a brief question-and-answer session. Over lunch, each participant chooses a challenge to work on for the rest of the week, ensuring that group sizes remain balanced. Group work with the company representative is scheduled for the afternoon. To round off the first day, everyone is invited to a reception.

Tuesday is entirely devoted to working groups. Coffee breaks and lunches are always taken together.

Wednesday morning is devoted to working groups. In the afternoon, we invite company representatives to join their groups to continue working on the challenge. In the evening, we enjoy a good study-week dinner at Chez Camille.

Thursday is the last day of the working group, during which each group begins to prepare its presentation of the results.

On Friday, each group presents the approach and results obtained for its challenge. Company representatives provide direct feedback. The study week ends with a lunch.

Technical report

In addition to the group presentations at the Friday morning session, we also expect each group to produce a technical report summarizing the work carried out. This report includes the methods used, the literature used, experimental results, conclusions and future work. We do not expect you to work on the report during the study week (you must concentrate on the problem during the week). We would like to receive your reports by the end of September 2023.
