Olivier Serre est ancien élève de l'ENS Cachan. Il a ensuite réalisé une thèse en informatique à l'université Paris-Diderot, un post-doctorant à RWTH Aachen, puis est devevnu chercheur au CNRS. Il est actuellement directeur de recherche au CNRS affecté à l'Institut de Recherche en Informatique Fondamentale (IRIF) au sein de l'équipe automates et applications. Il est également, depuis septembre 2021, directeur adjoint scientifique à l'institut CNRS Sciences informatiques.
